Excursions in Carinthia
Trips around about Lake Faaker - mountains, lakes and all the things that are part and parcel of being in the heart of Carinthia
Villach Warmbad / Lake Faaker / Lake Ossiacher - each one a region in Carinthia, which is abundantly blessed with everything the most southerly state in Austria has to offer: mountains, lakes, friendly, cheery people, a mild climate, a town with a lot of Mediterranean Renaissance flair and any amount of sporting opportunities.
Mountains in Carinthia
The striking geographical cornerstone of the region around the Wellness and Connoisseur Hotel Karnerhof is created by four mountains. One of these is the Gerlitzen, which soars directly on the northern shores of Lake Ossiacher. You really have to go the 'Glatze' ('baldy'), so-called by the locals due to its bare peak. It's more convenient to take the Kanzel train, which takes you to Mittelstation. From there, take the four-seater lift to the "Scheitel" at 1911 metres sea level. What from below looks like a medium-sized hill-top, emerges - once you get to the top - as a veritable hiking paradise. If you got there by train, then how about a walk back to the shores of the lake? On the route into the valley you'll come across a lot of many mountain bikers puffing and panting; they discovered the Gerlitzen for themselves long ago - as did the orienteers, who regularly hold their competitions on the mountain. The Gerlitzen is also popular with paragliders, who hold the mountain in high regard due to its good thermal lifts. If you'd like to give it a go - the Grabner'sche flying school, which is situated at Lake Ossiacher, offers tandem flights. Thrills, coupled with unique views of the Central Carinthia lake area, are guaranteed!
Villach Alps (Dobratsch) and the border triangle
The Villach Alps are a former ski region. You can get to 1732 metres, by car and from there a limitless hiking paradise unfolds in front of you with a really breathtaking panoramic view. On clear days you can even see the Großglockner, at 3798m, Austria's tallest mountain. Hobby botanists should pay a visit to the Alpine garden which brings the most beautiful flowers of the Southern Alps into one area.
The border triangle makes up the border to Italy and Slovenia. This mountain can also be reached by the modern chairlift. If you are holidaying in the region in autumn, you can even take part in Tour 3. On the second Sunday in September (09/09.) Austrians, Slovenians and Italians hike from their countries in a star-shaped formation to the summit of the mountain. There is then a real Alpine feast day celebration, with culinary specialities from the Alpe-Adria region.
Lake with an island and a mountain arena
The most southerly bathing lake in the region is Lake Faaker, in the middle of which is a charming island with a hotel. None of the Carinthian waterways glisten more cerulean under the sun's rays. Lake Faaker has made its mark as a family paradise.
Mittagskogel
The landmark mountain in the region around Lake Faaker is called Mittagskogel and is 2143 metres tall. Symmetrically shaped with impressive rocky flanks jutting off to the north and the north-west, it makes a classic setting for a photo. There are two variants on offer for hikers to ascend: the east side (starting point Bertahütte: 1567 m) and the south west side.
Finkenstein castle ruins
Soaring high above Lake Faaker on a mighty cliff are the ruins of Finkenstein castle. Saved by the owner of the castle, Mr. Satran, before it decayed, music and cabaret festivals now take place in the restored arena. It really is a unique experience when the sun goes down glowing red in the west behind the arena, while you listen to the sounds of stars such as Rainhard May, Montserrat Caballé or the theatrical outpourings from Otto Schenk.
Discover the city of Villach
In Austria, Villach is associated with the Villach carnival and Villach feast day celebrations. In actual fact there a lot to be said about the city on the River Drau and especially about its inhabitants. Here they know - while they eagerly work in the day-time - how to really party. In winter this is evident in the carnival meetings; the equivalent in summer is the feast day celebrations, which transform the city on the first week-end in August to a unique entertaining area. About 200,000 people swarm the city every year. This feast day celebration is a part of Villach feast week, the largest tradition event in Austria.
Discover the countryside - locations in the region around Lake Faaker
Villach Warmbad / Lake Faaker / Lake Ossiacher have much to offer. The region is made up of 10 boroughs, which are all worth a visit. Arriach for instance, the geographic hub of Carinthia, has centuries old farms which are connected via a farm trail. Wernberg has a monastery which is worth a visit. It is almost as if St. Magdalene's Lake, a genuine jewel of nature, was created for a bathing excursion. You should pay a visit to Treffen especially the Elli-Riehl puppet museum and to Egg on Lake Faaker, which is probably one of the most photographed wayside shrines in the world.
