Burgarena Finkenstein in Carinthia.
Carinthian cultural history. Culture with history.
But let's start at the beginning. Finkenstein Castle, steeped in history, was built in the 12th century high above Lake Faak in Carinthia, in a place with a perfect view and a great location to keep an eye on the entire region and spot any enemies early on. The Finkenstein family was first mentioned in documents in 1142. In 1233, a dispute arose between Heinrich von Finkenstein, Bernd von Spanheim and the Bishop of Bamberg over the Gail crossing in Federaun. In 1335, the castle finally came into the hands of the Habsburgs. In 1509, the castle was acquired by the Dietrichstein dynasty, who owned it until 1861. The castle was no longer inhabited from the end of the 17th century.
From the 18th century onwards, the castle increasingly fell into disrepair and it was not until the 20th century that it was used as a venue for events, partly due to the installation of the new "Burgarena" (as well as catering facilities), and gained a high profile in the region and beyond.
Today, the preserved remains of the former magnificent building house an arena with a capacity of around 1000 people for various concerts and cultural highlights, which take place every year from the beginning of June to the end of August. The old stonework continues to play a supporting role and creates a special atmosphere in the open air.
Numerous concerts have already taken place here - famous people such as Wolfgang Ambros, Rainhard Fendrich, Udo Jürgens, Placido Domingo, Andreas Gabalier and Konstantin Wecker have already been guests to perform and be celebrated in the historic surroundings.
