The Friuli-Venezia Giulia region.

Mediterraneo Nord.

Where the Italophile feeling begins. Immediately after the border, when you feel Italian soil under your feet for the first time. Covering an area of 7856 square kilometers, Friuli stretches from the Julian Alps to the Adriatic Sea. The fascinating history of the region with over 1.2 million inhabitants is shaped by the Roman Empire, the Lombards and the Habsburgs. A short drive from the Karnerhof: the border town of Tarvisio. For an espresso or an original Italian lunch. The picturesque Monte Lussari and the Laghi di Fusine with their green color and cold water are also close by. Great cities await you further south and still in the north-east of Italy. Follow in the footsteps of the author James Joyce in the capital Trieste. Look forward to shopping experiences in Udine. Always in focus: the culinary delights. Numerous wineries, the Prosecco region and San Daniele with its famous prosciutto and grappa will ignite a special kind of culinary fireworks.

Childhood memory: the Tarvis trip.

Most of us can still remember: a trip to Tarvisio with a detour to the colorful market, the feeling of dolce vita and the subsequent enjoyment of pizza or pasta was a must on every vacation in Carinthia. There was haggling and bargaining at the "Fetznmarkt" - and with the fashion pieces you bought, you were at least a year ahead of Austrian fashion. But even today, a sidestep to Tarvis is still charming. Only about 30 minutes away from the Karnerhof, you are in the middle of the Italian "Fa Niente". Although the ambience has lost some of its charm since the new market hall was built a few years ago, the wide range of products and attractive prices still have their appeal today.

The numerous restaurants offer Italian specialties in solid and liquid form and serve Friulian, Carinthian and Slovenian delicacies. Surrounded by the Julian Alps and rich in wide valleys and forests - the forest of Tarvisio with its 24,000 hectares is the largest state-owned forest in Italy - the town is trendy and modern today, but it also has an old soul, full of tradition and cultural heritage.

The Tarvisio area also offers outdoor enthusiasts an extremely wide range of activities. The lakes of Fusine (connected by a charming path) and the Montasch plateau near Tarvisio are well worth a visit. Tarvisio is also the starting point for numerous wonderful cycling tours in the surrounding area. On December 5, the Krampus carolers announce the arrival of St. Nicholas in the streets of the town.

Shopping in Udine.

Udine means "Chic & Fashionable". Udine can be easily reached from the Karnerhof in just under 90 minutes via the A23 autostrada from Tarvisio. For parking in Udine, we recommend a parking space in Viale del Ledra, Viale Giusseppe Duodo or Piazza 1 Maggio. From here you can easily explore the old town on foot. Here you can browse through the boutiques and sit in one of the many squares, enjoy a Spritz or caffè and marvel at the hustle and bustle of the city. Fridays and Saturdays are ideal for a visit to Udine. Piazza della Libertà, which is often described as a jewel or the most beautiful Venetian square on the Italian mainland, is particularly worth seeing. Countless Renaissance buildings are lined up here, including the Loggia del Lionello. The former town hall is one of the oldest and most important historical buildings in Udine. It is considered a landmark of the city and is a fine example of Venetian Gothic architecture.

Excursion tip: Pontebba.

A little Venetian and a little Austrian.

Pontebba is one of the first stops on Italian soil for anyone coming from Austria: After all, the bridge over the river Pontebbana was the national border until 1919, as can be seen immediately from the architecture, which combines Venetian and Austrian elements. It is a perfect cultural Central European mix, as can be seen in the parish church: Santa Maria Maggiore features a winged altar from the fifteenth century by the Carinthian master Wolfgang Haller. However, Pontebba was already a Roman customs station in the second century AD. It is therefore not surprising that the SS 13 road, which comes up from Friuli and leads to Carinthia, is known as the Pontebbana.

But it's not all about history here in the small village on the famous bridge: even though there are no longer any borders today, the bridge over the river still separates the municipality of Pontafel and the municipality of Pontebba. However, it no longer separates cultures, but has instead become a meeting point. Tourists can experience this over a coffee in the Caffè alla Posta. Austrians, Italians, Slovenians - nationality is irrelevant here. The popular Alps-Adriatic Cycle Path, one of the longest and most romantic cycle routes in Europe, runs right past here. In 2015, it even won an award at the Fiets en Wandelbeurs trade fair in Amsterdam - and the Dutch know a thing or two about cycling. The Alps-Adriatic Cycle Path is not just for cyclists, hikers also get their money's worth in the area. There are wonderful hiking trails in the forests and mountains around Pontebba.
