During the Spring and the Autumn, I often travel around Carinthia with my family, sampling new places. For us, it’s really interesting to explore the region in depth. And I really enjoy passing on my ‘insider tips’ to our guests.
The aroma of citrus fruit lingering in the air. Stroll and wander among the lemons and bitter oranges. You’ll find Austria’s largest citrus garden spread out over 4000 sq. metres directly on the shore of Lake Faaker See. Tours, tastings and concerts make this year-round attraction worth a visit at any time of year.
Some 155 Japanese macaques await you on the ‘Monkey Mountain’ or Affenberg in Landskron. These lively, sociable and good-natured animals will have you in a good mood in no time. The monkeys gambol and play freely on this protected 4-hectare reserve. In the summertime you might even catch them swimming! You can explore the Affenberg in on a tour or in private group, led by biologists and animal caretakers.
More than 1,300 delicate butterflies as well as countless types of animal and plant life await your discovery in the Dobratsch Nature Park. These include 125 bird species such as the Alpine citril finch, the black grouse, the ptarmigan, and the golden eagle. You can explore this immense natural variety on walking tours with park rangers.
A beautiful old city centre with a pedestrian area. Narrow alleys, sophisticated squares, well-stocked boutiques, lively cafés and great restaurants. Wander around and soak up the relaxed atmosphere of this city on the Drau River. Anyone who holidays here isn’t just served up with a romantic old town, but also with the spectacular Alps-Adriatic Region as an extra side order. Thanks to its proximity to Slovenia and Italy, Carinthia’s second largest town scores points for combining a free-spirited Mediterranean flair with an Alpine way of life. Here you’ll likely find Italian cappuccino rather than the usual Austrian mélange in a café, tiramisu rather than Sacher torte for dessert, and sip a glass of vintage Friulano rather than Veltliner.

- Motor-oriented: The Cabriotreffen (Convertible Meeting) and the European Bike Week are both events that now enjoy cult status. For more than 20 years, the latter has been attracting motorcyclists in the tens of thousands to the area around Lake Faaker See.

- Traditional: Out of your street clothes and into a dirndl or lederhose: 400,000 visitors make the Villach Kirchtag Austria’s largest traditional folk festival. A special taste to go with the event: the Karnerhof’s original Kirchtag or ‘sour’ soup.
